Dictionary of Departures
In ‘Dictionary of Departures’ (2006) an archive has
been appropriated and drawn into space. The work is concerned with the
relation of word to meaning, examining the latter as geography. Pavlakis
has borrowed all verbs indicating ‘departure’ or ‘assimilation’ from
the Oxford Dictionary and treats them as specters materializing in space.
The work visits borders, passages, ports, stations, airstrips and waiting
lounges, drawing its meanings from the conflicting relationship of word
to sound.
