Parallel
Having been through the immigration process, I had begun, in 2005, to sketch
out ideas for a series of very short video works and video loops dealing
with aspects of the experience for delivery in a non-linear environment.
The delivery of the works, about ten in all, is planned for multiple individual
screens – one per video – proximity activated as the viewer enters
range and as they describe their own path through a dimly lit, divided, maze-like
space.
Several unmarked entry points to the experience will provide choice, force
decisions, and cue the tone.
The design of the space should encourage some degree of disorientation and
apprehension; hinting at that of the actual process.
This is one parallel, others mirror the transactional aspects of the process;
yet another tracks the irony of our forced migration to a territory where
there are no entry requirements whatsoever and where residency is guaranteed:
guests and visitors to the space will find their own.
